Do I need a Federal Employment Identification Number (FEIN)?
|
Currently all entity types accommodated by SCBOS, except Sole Proprietorships, require a FEI Number. You can obtain a FEI Number by going to www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=97860,00.html.
The Federal Government does not require a FEIN for an LLC (Single Member). Currently, however, SCBOS does require an FEIN for all LLCs.
Some users have objected to first obtaining an FEIN before using SCBOS because, if the name turns out not be available in South Carolina, it is a hassle to correct it with the IRS. The best approach is to use SCBOS first and have SCBOS determine whether the name is available. Then, go to the IRS Website and obtain the FEIN. Return to SCBOS and finish the Application. While you are using the IRS Website, it is likely that you will experience a time-out on the SCBOS Website. That means that you will have to log back into the SCBOS Website. To get back to where you left off, click on the business name, click on the business or DBA name, click on Incomplete Applications, then click on Start New Business.
