Residential or Irrigation Well Permits

What is a residential well?
An Individual Residential Well is a potable water well intended to produce water for human consumption at a single residence or family.

What is an irrigation well?
An irrigation well is intended to produce water for uses other than human consumption, to include, but not be limited to, lawn and landscape watering and agricultural uses.

When can I get my permit number?
You may call and get your permit number over the phone 48 hours after the Agency receives your application. The 48 hour waiting period does not include weekends or holidays.

How long before the well can be drilled?
The driller may begin work after a 48 hour waiting period except in the case of an emergency.

Must the well driller I select be licensed?
The law requires that all drillers be licensed in the state of South Carolina to install wells. Names of licensed well drillers may be found at: https://verify.llronline.com/LicLookup/Environmental/Enviro.aspx?div=70  or by calling 803-896-4430, the SC Environmental Certification Board.

May I transfer a permit that I have not used to another site?
Upon notification to the Agency, the permit fee may be transferred for use at another location. The new site will be issued a new permit number by DHEC.
